Innovative Design for Alzheimer Care Facility Praised
The innovative architecture and design of the new Silvergate Alzheimer and Dementia care facility in San Marcos is receiving praise from health care professionals, who say that residents are demonstrating an improved quality of life.
Developed by Americare, the Silvergate facility represents a unique approach to Alzheimer and Dementia care, says Solana Beach architect Allard Jansen, principal of Allard Jansen Architects, Inc., which designed the project. Modeled after Santa Barbara's Biltmore Hotel, the 32,500 square foot building provides six different “neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood has its own theme designed to assist residents in recognizing location and finding their way.
“The design is intended to de-institutionalize the building and make it a safe, secure, yet friendly environment for residents,” says Jansen. “There are few hallways and residents are encouraged to wander within the designated neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood has its own living room, with adjacent, open kitchens and laundry rooms where residents participate in cooking and laundry.
“Americare wanted a fresh residential perspective and departure from the old, traditional institutional design,” explains Jansen, whose firm was sought out by Americare due to its reputation for award-winning residential architecture.
Opened in September of 2000, Silvergate is now celebrating its first anniversary with leasing exceeding expectations, says Jansen. “Staff tells us that the facility's design, which is so different from traditional care facilities, has been a major factor in Silvergate's popularity. Not only is the resident's quality of life enhanced, but the environment has led to reductions in many patient's required medication.”
